Week 3 Thoughts:

Lane Kiffin’s awkward homecoming back to Ole Miss as the new head coach at LSU was a game that lived up to its hype.  In addition to the obvious awkwardness and intrigue of that matchup (Kiffin’s former assistant at Ole Miss is now the Rebels’ head coach) was a layer of irony piled on top of it all.  Clearly the idea behind Kiffin’s sudden, jarring departure from a playoff-bound program was to go to an even greener pasture.  Yet the team Kiffin left behind played like the more physical team, not to mention having an overwhelming advantage in quarterback play.  Despite the Tigers’ occasional flash of brilliance, the Rebels were able to maintain their lead throughout most of the game, and triumphed in the end, 32-24, in what must have felt like a massive vindication for the faithful fans in Oxford, Miss.

When one widens the angle of the lens, a curious dynamic comes into view.  Louisville opened the season against Ole Miss, and almost beat them.  LSU, seemingly a stronger team than the Cardinals, had greater struggles against the Rebels in their game than the Cards did against the same team in theirs.  Meanwhile, Louisville defeated a formidable SMU team at home.

Next week, Wake Forest comes calling at Louisville, the same Demon Deacons that hanged tough against currently-No. 6 Miami.  Whereas the Cardinals faced a must-win for conference championship viability this just-concluded week, they could face a potential upset in the week to come.

Random Thoughts:

Offensive explosions I did not have on my bingo card this week included Florida at Auburn (the Gators won, 44-39); Mississippi State at South Carolina (the Bulldogs won, 41-34); Florida State at Alabama (the Tide eventually pulled away, 50-36); and, perhaps the most odd of them all, Purdue at UCLA, with the Bruins winning 52-38.

Speaking of Mississippi State, they have been on a tear recently.  The Bulldogs humiliated Minnesota up in Minneapolis the previous week before pulling out another win on the road in Columbia.  Now at No. 24, they face No. 19 Missouri in their biggest test yet.

Speaking of potential upsets, keep an eye on how Ole Miss reacts to their big win, as they venture into The Swamp next week to face an apparently resurgent Florida team, now ranked No. 21.

Meanwhile, whither LSU?  Now at No. 10 (only losing two spots in the rankings), they face Texas A&M, erstwhile No. 9, now all the way down to No. 23 after coughing up the game at home to still-unranked Kentucky.  Both teams now have a chance to recover their wounded pride and standing, making for a uniquely must-win situation.

Along the same subject of must-wins, how does Texas respond to their No. 1 ranking?  They now must venture into a hostile Neyland Stadium to face No. 14 Tennessee.  Not so long ago, on paper, such a discrepancy in the rankings would be overwhelming.  With NIL having brought a new level of parity to the upper rankings, that gap in rank is not so overwhelming anymore.  Bottom line, the Horns will have a major fight on their hands, in what should be the best game of the week, within the Noon Eastern Time slot, no less.

Week 2 Thoughts:

The Ohio State-Texas game lived up to its hype, with a miraculous comeback win for the Longhorns over the Buckeyes, a result that has left Buckeye Nation in apoplexy if these articles are of any indication.  Allowing Texas to score three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter is the worst second-half collapse for the Buckeyes in the Ryan Day Era.

Conversely, OSU collapse or none, this is massive win for the Longhorns, one that gets a major monkey off the program’s – and Sark’s – back.  For how long have discussions swirled that Texas cannot win the big game?  Now they have the huge win.

Win or lose, both teams will be able to lick their wounds for a week, what with body bag games coming up for both of them.  Then, it’s on to the season, where Ohio State can no doubt take the Big Ten by storm, and where Texas has the opportunity to prove that this huge win was not a fluke as they face a positively brutal SEC schedule.

Random Thoughts:

As I look back on the random thoughts I offered for Week 2 from last year, I am struck by the interesting parallels and related differences.

For instance, take this week’s Cy-Hawk trophy game between Iowa and Iowa State.  I wrote:

“The only reason the game for the Cy-Hawk trophy ended as closely as it did was because of avoidable mistakes committed by the victors.  Sooner or later, a team that make fewer mistakes shall come along to play Iowa, and when they do, expect a humiliating defeat for the Hawkeyes and a possible end to the Kirk Ferentz era.”

Given how last night’s game was such a low-scoring affair, one could say the exact same thing for this go-around.

Regardless, there’s something about Iowa and their massive trophies.  The Cy-Hawk trophy is so heavy, at 90 pounds, it required two o-linemen to carry it.  If that’s not enough, the Floyd of Rosedale trophy, played for annually between the Hawkeyes and Minnesota, is even heavier at 98 pounds.

But in continuation of the initial observation, in another parallel to last year’s week 2 observations, Illinois played their home half of the home-and-home series with Duke.  But in contrast to last year’s 45-19 ripping victory on the road, this time Duke pulled off an upset on the road, 31-27.  While I observed last year:

“Keep an eye out for Illinois.  They are currently ranked No. 9, and defeated a well-coached Duke team, 45-19.”, the Illini are currently unranked.  I can’t imagine why.

Returning to the Texas-Ohio State game, one thing that allowed for an improved offensive output for the Longhorns in the second half was Sark getting out of Arch Manning’s way.  Let us hope for the sake of that team that their head coach continues to heed this lesson as the season progresses.

Week 12 [Random] Thoughts:

After seeing the way Ohio State easily dispatched with UCLA and how Georgia dominated an improved Texas, it has become quite clear that, barring a massive development along the lines of a huge asteroid hitting the Earth causing another mass extinction, the Buckeyes and the Bulldogs are destined to duke it out for the national championship.  Glad we got that cleared up and out of the way.

That being said, barring a similar development as described above, it seems increasingly likely that Ole Miss shall punch through a major barrier hitherto holding them back and make finally make the playoffs.  They passed yet another test by beating the Gators.  Granted, the casual observer might sniff “big deal, Florida’s not that good this year.”  To which I may respond, granted in turn, but they’re also not that bad, and they took down Texas right before the Longhorns took down a then-hitherto juggernaut Sooner squad.  But even then, let that not obfuscate a more salient point which is:  since 2003, the two have played each other seven times.  Despite the relatively massive successes of the Eli Manning years, the Hugh Freeze and now the Lane Kiffin eras, the Rebels were only 3-for-7 against the Gators.  In that light, beating Florida is no small thing, and is further proof that Ole Miss not only controls their own destiny, but is in the unique position to do so ably, what with a bye next week before closing out the regular season with the Egg Bowl.

Back to the Texas-Georgia game.  Even if the Longhorns win out (tall order, what with Texas A&M being the last game on their schedule), their playoff hopes are likely dashed after the beating they took Between the Hedges.  Kirby Smart demonstrated he was a level above Steve Sarkesian in terms of coaching when, after scoring on the Longhorns, they then sucker-punched Texas with an on-side kick that they recovered.  The message was clear:  “forget about momentum and forget about your comeback.  We won’t even let you have the ball again”.

Thus we are led to a rather painful conclusion:  Sark is not the coach to lead the Horns to the promised land.  He is a great offensive architect, but that has been both a blessing and a curse.  The curse is that he has yet to decide if he is an offensive coordinator or a head coach first.  This self-imposed quandary has led to him tying himself up at knots at times, seemingly straightjacketing Arch Manning in the process, while ignoring other details of overall team organization.  Hence, Sark has earned the reputation of his team not being entirely “buttoned up”, and an obvious manifestation of that are the unnecessary penalties that plagued his team last night and in many games before then.

So, if Sark is not the coach to take Texas all the way, who is?  That is the question we shall have to explore further in subsequent articles.

In the meantime, next week shall sadly be a let-down, in that the rest of the SEC has its body-bag fest before Rivalry Week.  Alabama assumes the role of pitiless executioner to Eastern Illinois; Auburn to Mercer; Texas A&M to Samford; Charlotte to Georgia.  Rather convenient, it is, that the SEC teams can have such a breather while the rest of the teams in FBS put in the work.  At least LSU makes it somewhat interesting playing Western Kentucky (8-2 compared to the Tigers’ 6-4 record).  That game could be all the more intriguing given LSU’s recent struggles and coaching avulsions.

Fortunately, this farcical aspect of SEC schedules ends soon.  Starting next year, SEC teams shall play a 9-game conference schedule like everyone else, and thank heavens for that.

Meanwhile, some SEC teams got their requisite November body-bag games out of the way earlier, and shall thus have decent, if not great, matchups for us to enjoy after all, what with battered Texas playing reeling Arkansas, or, better yet, Florida playing Tennessee.  Can the Volunteers avenge last years upset loss against the Gators?  We’ll find out next week.

Week 10 [Random] Thoughts:

Texas played some of its best football all season – for three-and-a-half quarters, at least.  A long bomb to the end zone threatened to break favored Vanderbilt’s collective back, only to find out that the receiver dropped the ball upon further review.  That gave the Commodores enough time to regroup in an effort to overcome a three-TD deficit.  The Longhorns’ collapse of their defense late in the 4th quarter almost enabled that.  Sloppy play on both sides of the ball that pushed Vandy’s on-side kick out of bounds finally sealed the deal for Texas.  But the final minutes of play left the 100,000+ faithful in DKR Memorial Stadium breathing a sigh of relief instead of belting out a massive cheer in celebration of this counterintuitive upset.

To zoom out the lens, Texas pulled off an improbably comeback on the road last week.  This week, they almost allowed for an improbably comeback at home.  Looks like Sark needs to teach his team how to play the whole 60 minutes.

Meanwhile, can Josh Heupel & Co. find a higher gear?  As good as this Tennessee teams have been these past few years, he cannot seem to be able to pick up a signature win against the heavyweights within his own conference, or even others (witness the drubbing the Volunteers took in Ohio Stadium during last year’s playoffs).

Oklahoma, conversely, picked up a quality win, which, ironically, gives hated rival Texas’ decisive win over the Sooners all the more quality.

Where has this Florida team been all year?  Notwithstanding their win over the Longhorns in the Swamp, the Gators have underperformed the rest of the year…until now, when they threatened to upset No. 5 Georgia at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party in Jacksonville (yes, I’m still calling that), and it turned out to be the greatest game of the week.

Week 9 [Random] Thoughts:

Vanderbilt, the perennial punching bag of the SEC, is now ranked in the top ten for the first time since 1947.  Let that sink in for a moment.  How did this come about?  The likely answer is, a number of factors.  Clark Lea certainly had a vision, greatly aided to fruition by talented QB Diego Pavia.  But surely other talented players have been key factors in this fascinating development.  That is where the combination of the transfer portal and the NIL come into play.  Vanderbilt has enjoyed the well-earned reputation of being the most prestigious school in the SEC, and with that surely comes some reasonably deep pockets to fund a strong NIL collective, to say nothing of its location in growing corporate hotbed Nashville.  As fans of college football, let us embrace the opportunity to witness this further develop, for if nothing else, it gives us all the more great SEC matchups to enjoy every Saturday.

Texas pulled off an improbable comeback in the 4th quarter at Mississippi State.  Arch Manning went 29-35 for 346 yards and 4 touchdowns, with one interception, and that came from a deflection off the hands of a receiver.  In the 4th quarter, Manning went 12-20, passing for 169 yards and two touchdowns.  Yet the biggest irony of all was when he went out, concussed, in overtime.  Backup Matthew Caldwell went into the game, and executed in a massive way, throwing the game-winning touchdown.  Could it be that the biggest untapped strength of this young, unstable Texas team is its backup QBs?

Is the Brian Kelly experiment in Baton Rouge about to come to a sudden, ignominious end?  Texas A&M embarrassed LSU in Death Valley, 49-25.  Early in the 4th quarter, fans started to empty the stands in droves.  Such is hardly the look the powers that be in LSU’s athletics department like to project during a primetime game on ABC.  But in Kelly’s defense, the Tigers’ three losses all come to current, top-ten teams, those being Ole Miss (currently No. 8), Vanderbilt (currently No. 9), and now Texas A&M (currently No. 3).  Can some blame be nevertheless placed at Kelly’s feet for not having an optimal season?  Surely, yes.  He certainly has failed at designing an offense to play to QB Garrett Nussmeier’s strengths, but that also assumes that he has any strengths worth noting in the first place.  But while many are now calling for Kelly’s head, some context in this situation might be a benefit to everyone.

Meanwhile, Ole Miss seemed to pass a key test by defeating Oklahoma on the road, 34-26.  With a reasonably clear path to win out in the regular season, it is quite reasonable to conclude that the Rebels control their own destiny to make the playoffs this year, surely legitimizing Lane Kiffin’s tenure in Oxford in the process.

Week 7 Thoughts:

Another monster week for college football, with great games abounding from noon Eastern through night, and upsets abounding in turn.  Indiana proved that they are a considerable force to be reckoned with in defeating Oregon, on the road, no less.  USC continues to quietly gain strength after losing to Illinois earlier in the year, this time by defeating ranked Michigan in rather convincing fashion.  Colorado proved to have some fight within them by upsetting Iowa State on the road.  Then we had the Red River Showdown, and the incredibly electric environment it always produces.  Many in the sports commentary space had given Texas up for dead after their loss to Florida in the Swamp last week.  The calculus was that since the Longhorns’ offense sputtered against the Gators’ defense, given that Oklahoma’s defense is even better, Texas would likely be demolished in Dallas.  But as the great Lee Corso would say, “[N]ot so fast, my friend!”  The Longhorns’ defense stepped up in a major way, cramping the performance of the Sooner’s star QB John Mateer as he returned to the line-up, going so far as to shut out OU in the second half and to deny them reaching the endzone the entire game.  In so doing, Texas defense gave their offense time to get their sea-legs under them.  Thus, Texas’ triumph was unexpected, and all the more savored.

Elsewhere, Pitt upset Florida State, in Tallahassee, no less, but perhaps the biggest upset of all came when Northwestern stunned Penn State in Happy Valley, 22-21.  That loss came on the heels of the Nittany Lions already losing that heartbreaker to Oregon, then laying an egg on the road to UCLA.  Now they have suffered this defeat, which is no ignominious and ill-timed that Penn State fired James Franklin today.  Penn State’s current state was made all the worse with QB Drew Allar suffering a season-ending injury late in the game.  What started out as a potential championship season for the Nittany Lions now lies in ruin.

Some near-upsets also occurred wherein Mizzou was on the verge of defeating favored Alabama before the Tiger’s QB threw a sudden pick that ended the drive and their hopes of victory.  In a similar situation was Washington State, who ventured into Ole Miss and nearly defeated the home team before the Rebels somehow managed to escape with their skin intact.  Arkansas presented a serious challenge to Tennessee, signaling that the Bobby Petrino Era 2.0 is on the rise in Fayetteville.  Late into the night, Arizona took BYU in a second overtime before the Cougars managed to pull out the win.

What a week.

Random Thoughts:

UCLA was once the whipping boy of the B1G.  Not anymore.  Perhaps all it took was the firing of the inept DeShaun Foster, inter aliaBut now the Bruins are a rising force in the conference.  First, they massively upset Penn State at home last week.  This week, they went on the road to dismantle Michigan State.  Not a moment too soon, either, since all the remaining opponents – including Indiana and Ohio State – or nearly-ranked (e.g., Maryland and Washington).  At this rate, their traditional rivalry game against USC should be one the best in Gen-Z’s living memory.

Meanwhile, has there been a team to more quietly advance up the rankings than Georgia Tech, at least recently?  The Yellowjackets are currently undefeated (6-0), and have now reached the rank of No. 12.

Week 3 Thoughts:

We the fans enjoyed two incredible games this week, one was during the 3:30 EDT timeslot in Knoxville, between Georgia and Tennessee.  The other was in the evening, in South Bend, as a rematch between Texas A&M and Notre Dame.  Both we close games that went down to the wire.

For the former, Tennessee had the chance to bring home the win, but made too many mistakes, and in the end, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

For the latter, fewer mistakes on both sides of the ball were made, and was arguably an even more epic game.  The ‘so-what’ outcome is that Mike Elko & Co. finally have a signature win, establishing the Aggies as a force to be reckoned with in their division of the SEC.

Random Thoughts:

Either Vanderbilt is that good or South Carolina decided to take a night off in their own home stadium.  Making sense of such a drubbing on one’s own home turf shall take time in the form of seeing more games from the Commodores to find out if embarrassing the Gamecocks was some fluke or if they are the real deal.

Should the Longhorn faithful become increasingly concerned?  Probably.  For the second week in a row in what should have been a cakewalk for Texas, the home team scored only 27 points against lowly, lowly UTEP.  QB Arch Manning remains off-rhythm, still missing easy passes.  What on Earth is going on in Austin?  They have one last game to get it together (against Sam Houston State) before things start to get real with conference play.

Was Clemson overrated all this time, or has Georgia Tech been underrated for the same duration?  Regardless, the Yellow Jackets winning on a last-second field goal provided yet another thrilling finish to contribute to a great day for the game of college football.  The completed FG made me want to jump up like Homer Simpson (in Season 1 of the long-enduring sitcom), exclaiming “It’s good!  It’s good!”

Week 1 Thoughts:

The 2025-’26 college football season has launched for real, and a few good games have helped the season launch more than respectfully.  Indeed, in one of the greatest opening games in living memory, No. 1 Texas came to Columbus to play No. 3 (and defending national champ) Ohio State.  Adding even more drama and poignancy to this already-historic matchup was the fact that this was legendary ESPN football commentator Lee Corso’s last appearance on the network’s College Gameday show.  In a very classy farewell gesture, Corso, 90, wore a tuxedo for his farewell appearance.  The Ohio State band formed the letters “CORSO” on the field right before kickoff, and he was joined by the Gameday crew a the 50 yard line of Ohio Stadium to deliver his final “headgear” stunt.  Appropriately, he donned the Brutus Buckeye head.  How could he not?  Twenty-nine years ago, his first ever big-game outcome prognostication vis-à-vis donning the team’s mascot head was born at Ohio State, where he likewise put on Brutus’ head.  It was more than fitting that he bookended his legendary body of work at ESPN by doing the same thing, in fitting tribute to the place where the cherished tradition began.

The game itself was incredible, with huge defensive plays abounding throughout the game.  Ryan Day’s overall strategy of bringing in Matt Patricia from the NFL paid off handsomely.  Patricia used his vast NFL experience to call up defensive schemes to make inexperienced Texas QB Arch Manning uncomfortable, and it showed in the Longhorns’ lack of offensive output throughout all but the last drive of the game.  Still, Manning managed to exploit the occasional crack in the Buckeyes’ defense, and Texas was thus one pass completion away from taking the game into overtime.

In a larger sense, this loss on the part of the Longhorns shall not tank their season.  Should Texas effectively regroup and make the playoffs come season’s end, surely their path shall cross that of Ohio State yet again.  Should they do so, it is almost always impossible to beat the same formidable opponent again in the same season, as the Buckeyes demonstrated with devasting effectiveness against Oregon in the most recent Rose Bowl.

The Broader Line-up of Games

In what might become an annual tradition for the first week of college football awards each season, it is worth noting the many poor matchups among a few really great games.  Once again, most of the matchups scream “[W]hy are they playing?”  To wit (final scores indicated in parentheses):

Louisville vs EKU (51-17); Arizona State vs Northern Arizona (38-19); SMU vs East Texas A&M (42-13); BYU vs Portland State (69-0); Tulsa vs Abilene Christian (35-7); North Texas vs Lamar (51-0); Ole Miss vs Georgia State (63-7); Texas Tech vs Arkansas Pine Bluff (67-7); USC vs Missouri State (73-13); Florida vs Long Island University (55-0); Arkansas St. vs SE Missouri State (42-24); W. Kentucky vs North Alabama (55-6); Oklahoma vs Illinois State (35-3); Iowa vs Albany (34-7); James Madison vs Weber State (45-10); Memphis vs Chattanooga (45-10); Arkansas vs Alabama A&M (52-7); Oregon vs Montana State (59-13); Penn State vs. Nevada (46-11); Georgia vs Marshall (45-7); Iowa State vs South Dakota (55-7); Air Force vs Buckness (49-13); Boston College vs Fordham (66-10); West Virgina vs Robert Morris (45-3); UConn vs Central Conn. St. (59-13); Pittsburgh vs Duquense (61-9); Navy vs VMI (52-7); Illinois vs Western Illinois (52-3); Kansas vs Wagner (46-7); Florida International vs Bethune-Cookman (42-9); SDSU vs Stony Brook (42-0); Houston vs Stephen F. Austin (27-0); Missouri vs Central Arkansas (61-6); Oklahoma State vs Tennessee-Martin (27-7); Duke vs Elon (45-17)

I would add other games as well to the above litany, except that the intended punching bags managed to make the games somewhat respectable, such as Indiana vs Old Dominion (27-14); Wisconsin vs Miami (OH) (17-0); Minnesota vs Buffalo (23-10); Wyoming vs Akron (10-0); UNLV vs Idaho State (38-31); Kentucky vs Toledo (24-16) and Michigan vs New Mexico (34-17).  The joke was truly on Army, who lost to lowly Tarleton State in the second overtime, 30-27.

As far as college football has evolved (e.g., the new playoff format), further evolution is clearly in order.  To be sure, these absolutely atrocious lineups are likely a holdover of the recent time when one loss could potentially tank a team’s entire season.  That is no longer the case, however, so going forward, it is not unreasonable for us fans to expect more marquee matchups such as the aforementioned Texas vs Ohio State, or Virginia Tech vs South Carolina, or Alabama @ Florida State, or Miami (FL) vs Notre Dame, and especially LSU @ Clemson, a memorable game in its own right.  Likewise with Notre Dame @ Miami (Fla.), which turned out to be another fantastic game.  More of these top-ten matchups, please!  Moreover, Monday night matchup of TCU @ North Carolina, which happens to also be Bill Belichick’s college coaching debut, holds much promise as well.

Just do not expect to see such needed evolution take place next week, which shall deliver too many “why are they playing?” matchups as well.

Week 14 Thoughts:

Let us confront the 800-lb. gorilla in the room.  It was all set for Ohio State.  All they had to do was win the game.  But the game turned out to be “The Game”, and in “The Game”, the Buckeyes choked massively.  QB Will Howard failed to seek out his marquee weapons.  The receivers dropped key passes.

While we can lay this massive failure at the feet of the offense, perhaps we should be more specific and lay the failure at the feet of Ryan Day and the offensive tactics he chose by wanting to prove how tough his team was by winning “tough”, that is, winning by battling out in the trenches running the ball between the tackles.  That’s all well and good, but when your strengths are at the perimeters, not on the line (remember, Ohio State was working with a patchwork line-up on the o-line due to injuries), then the smart play is to play to those strengths.

This tactical failure on the part of Day is all the more stark when one considers that while Ohio State has an unbeatable receiving corps, Michigan was “patchwork” in the secondary.  Such is the magnitude of the missed opportunity.  My lingering question is, to what extent did Chip Kelly influence the offensive tactics for this game?

No more B1G championship berth for Ohio State:  that now goes to Penn State instead.  At least they have retained a No. 7 ranking in the polls, which should, in all likelihood, help them clinch a spot in the playoffs anyhow.  But this loss will smart, especially since Ryan Day is now 1-4 against their hated rival, “that school up north”.  One takeaway is that Day’s tenure in Columbus just became much more tenuous.  He can consult John Cooper on the “why”.

Elsewhere, Miami (FL) had a golden opportunity to make it to the ACC championship and clinch a spot in the playoffs.  All they had to do was beat Syracuse, but then they blew a three-TD lead to Syracuse in the second half.  Now, not only are the Hurricanes out of the ACC championship, their potential bid for the playoffs is very much in doubt.  Funny how one game can do that, but this reminds us that November is for everything.

One team that did rise to the occasion, barely, was Texas.  The Longhorns and the Aggies renewed their rivalry on Saturday, playing for the first time since 2011.  The Horns were ranked No. 3, but the Aggies were also ranked and No. 20.  Sounds like advantage, Longhorns…except that the game was at nighttime in Kyle Field, a bona fide hostile place to play.  Nevertheless, despite some hiccups on offense (Ewers threw a pick-six, for example), Texas still prevailed, 17-7.  Were it not for the pick-six, the game could have ended 24-0 or better in Texas’ favor.  Give the game ball to the Longhorns’ D for shutting down A&M’s offense.  Meanwhile, Sark has work to do on offense when they take on Georgia in Atlanta for all the marbles in the conference.  To that end, is Ewers dealing with a more serious injury than we are led on to believe?  If so, Sark would be well-served to deploy Manning at the drop of a hat in Atlanta next week.

One interesting development is that South Carolina defeated in-state rival Clemson in Death Valley (no small feat), but since the Tigers’ loss was not in-conference, they still get to play SMU for the ACC championship.  Looks like that loss to Louisville earlier in the season did not mortally wound their chances for the playoffs after all.  But how might they fare against the Mustangs?  The potentially lone ACC representative hangs in the balance of that game’s outcome.

Same goes for Iowa State playing Arizona State for the Big XII title, unless the playoff committee chooses Colorado to be within the bubble for a playoff bid.  Speaking of the Buffaloes, they certainly make a strong case to be considered by crushing Oklahoma State 52-0.

Two teams that quietly get things done:  Notre Dame and Boise State.  We can debate about strength of schedule for these two teams, especially that of the latter, but in the beauty contest that is college football, the pollsters and the playoff committee alike seem to like what the Broncos are selling.  Perhaps we will all need a dose of truth serum should Boise State make the playoffs and get embarrassed in the first round.  Tuesday’s latest round of revised rankings will give us a better idea of where these teams stand regardless.

Both Alabama and South Carolina are on the bubble for a playoff berth.  Should the Gamecocks be favored over the Tide?  It’s a fair question when one considers that Alabama laid an egg to a sub-par Oklahoma team, while South Carolina beat their ranked, hated rival on said rival’s home turf, no less.  Clearly the better momentum is with the ‘Cocks.  Will the playoff committee consider these as they release their updated rankings come Dec. 3?

Week 8 Thoughts:

Last week was a tough act to follow.  This week nevertheless delivered some good ones.

Let us address the 900-pound gorilla in the room by taking a look at the Georgia-Texas game.  The Longhorns are still good, but the Bulldogs bested them last night anyhow.  One takeaway is that neither team was able to handle its opponents’ front seven in the second half.  The problem was, Texas was also unable to handle Georgia’s in the first half.  Both teams have work to do to improve, with Georgia still probably having the bigger problem to deal with in terms of limitations of their own quarterback.  Nevertheless, it was a good game.

Perhaps more of a thriller was Tennessee defeating Alabama at home.  Nico Iamaleava seems to have marginally improved from the previous couple of games (he completed a monster pass with 1:33 left in the first half, for example, and made a clutch TD pass with 5:52 left in the game), but the real salvation for Tennessee came in their running game.  The tradition of the fans of the winning team lighting cigars materialized in such a way to see a smokey haze ascend out of Neyland Stadium upon the conclusion of the game.  As an aside, Alabama is 0-2 against teams from Tennessee this year.  That cannot sit well among the Crimson-clad faithful in the Yellowhammer State.

Don’t look now, but Indiana University is now 7-0 after dusting Nebraska 56-7.  At this rate, a projected record of 11-1 is not an unreasonable prognostication for the Hoosiers.

In other news, seeing Illinois don their 1920s-era throwback uniforms in honor of the 100th anniversary of Red Grange’s senior season there was a sheer delight to see.  Yes, before the Galloping Ghost become the first superstar in the NFL, he was tearing it up on the gridiron for Illinois.  Further props to Illinois for being able to recreate the vintage leather helmet graphic pattern on their modern-day Riddells.

Forget the last week’s prognostications:  the actual offensive explosion this week turned out to be Miami at Louisville.  The No. 6 Hurricanes triumphed in the end, 52-45.  Imagine if the Cardinals had a slightly better defense.  Not only would the outcome of the game likely been different, but their current record of 4-3 would likely be better as well.
